» Your tasks

The medical data integration center (MeDIC) of the University Hospital Cologne is currently searching for a skilled and proficient software engineer to elevate our medical data-sharing infrastructure. You will contribute to the design, development, testing, and documentation of novel research data infrastructure projects that enable the secondary use of health data for clinical research. In particular your tasks include:

 

  • Design and implement data-driven software solutions along the entire software development life cycle, including requirements engineering, software design, implementation, testing, integration and maintenance
  • Develop security measures for the standardization and integration of medical data
  • Develop new concepts of SOA/microservices
  • Develop and implement strategies for migration, consolidation and upgrade of middleware components
  • Design, develop, and maintain custom developed data sharing services including the development of custom scripts, utilities, and integrations using a variety of software tools to fulfil needs as identified
  • Deliver robust, tested and performant code
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary IT teams of other institutes, research groups as well as industry

» Your Profile

  • MSc in informatics, computer science or another relevant field
  • Demonstrated advanced programming expertise in object-oriented programming (preferably Java and Python) and in developing and delivering robust end-to-end software solutions
  • Experience with modern relational and non-relational databases (e.g. Oracle, PostgreSQL, Microsoft SQL Server, MongoDB)
  • Working knowledge of HTTP and RESTful interfaces
  • Basic understanding, ideally coupled with hands-on experience, in containerization and orchestration technologies such as Docker, Kubernetes, as well as container registries such as Harbor, and familiarity with the Docker API
  • Being familiar with microservice design patterns such as CQRS for technical design, develop, and maintenance of Java web applications would be a plus
  • Knowledge of modern software development tools and practices including DevOps, continuous integration (CI) and continuous deployment (CD), containerization, and shell scripting
  • Interest in working with the following technologies: HashiCorp Vault, Apache Airflow, MinIO, Camunda, Keycloak with OpenID Connect/OAuth 2.0, and possibly Vue.js, Angular, or React.js
  • Experience in healthcare industry and hands on experience with international medical standards (HL7 FHIR, HL7 v2, HL7 v3) and ontologies (LOINC, SNOMED) would be an advantage
  • Strong willingness to learn new technologies
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to make informed decisions and to work independently are a requirement
  • Good communication skills and eager to work as part of an interdisciplinary research team
  • English language skills

As part of the Medical Informatics Initiative (MII), and the national Network of University Medicine (NUM), the University Hospital Cologne established a medical data integration center (MeDIC), The main goal of the MeDIC is to create the technical and organizational prerequisites for the use of clinical routine data in medical research. The MeDIC allows the transfer of data from a wide range of clinical information systems, the integration and processing of clinical data, and ensuring data quality and compliance to data governance.
